Condensed Biography for State Deputy Paul J. Upman, PhD
Paul has been a Knight for nearly 40 years having joined in Silver Springs MD. Paul and Lee have four children, nine grand children, and three great grandchildren. Paul and Lee are members of St Joseph’s parish in Maumee where Paul serves as a Eucharistic Minister for masses and at St Luke’s Hospital in Maumee. In 2006 Paul retired after a 40-year career in biomedical research, with his last position being Director of Scientific Services at NamSA, a medical device research laboratory in Northwood Ohio. This is the company that brought Paul and family to Ohio in late 1976. During his career, Paul wrote or published more than 50 papers and served on national and international committees setting standards for the evaluation of biomaterials and devices. In 2004 he was named one of the 100 most notable contributors to the Medical Device Industry.
As a Knight, Paul has held numerous positions at the Council, Chapter, District and Assembly levels. His first State Director position was in 1993 and he has served as a Director under every State Deputy since, until elected as State Warden in 2001. After methodically progressing through each state officer position, he was elected State Deputy at the State Convention May 2009.
